Online Learning Maths

Working to achieve mastery in mathematics
The 2014 National Curriculum for mathematics has been designed to raise standards in maths, with the aim that the large majority of pupils will achieve mastery of the subject. Mathematics programmes of study state that:
  • All pupils should become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.
  • The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. When to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage.
  • Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those pupils who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

My teaching philosophy

Teaching is a lifelong learning process where you learn new strategies and novel ideas from the pupils, parents and colleagues and re-evaluate your values over time.

Learning requires effort on the part of the learner, I believe each and every pupil have unique strengths, own interests and special talents, that given the right opportunities and support over time can be harnessed and developed to achieve their full potential.

When pupils study mathematics that is relevant and meaningful from their perspective, they understand the concepts better.

Background

In establishing and managing Alphareach tutorial centre, tutoring online and face-to-face, I’ve been inspired to create topic-based workbooks, numerous worksheets and many other educational resources for pupils in primary and secondary school.

I am an accomplished e-learning course designer and content developer with experience in crafting engaging, enriching and interactive content.

I have also presented workshops for parents giving ideas and strategies for building children's confidence in maths at home.

Key skills

  • I provide personalised learner-centred tuition based on the student's prior knowledge, skill and ability.
  • I use resources that are relevant and meaningful for the pupil to raise awareness of the underlying concepts.
  • I structure the tutorial sessions to support the National Curriculum.

Achievements

I have over twenty-five years of experience tutoring pupils from ages five to fifty. Over this time, I have had the pleasure of tutoring pupils of varied backgrounds and all abilities - from gifted and talented high achievers to special needs forging many long-lasting friendships with parents, pupils and colleagues. I am truly enriched by this inspiring, rewarding and life-long learning journey!

Whatever the pupil's needs are, be it to improve and reach the target grades, get to grips with mathematical concepts or need some confidence boosting sessions - get in touch. I look forward to meeting you - let's begin this amazing journey of exploring the universal language of mathematics!

Testimonial

We are very happy with the tuition delivered by Sofia, who‘s supporting my daughter with GCSE level maths. Within the first six months of working with Sofia, my daughter had been moved from a class at school working towards the lower paper to the higher maths class. Sofia is warm and extremely encouraging with a sustained patience essential to my shy daughter, who finds maths challenging. She identifies areas where additional support is needed whilst following the school curriculum, so my daughter has support as she progresses.

Due to the Coronavirus, we have recently switched to on-line lessons with Sofia, which has worked really well. The interactive style and on-line screen sharing has been amazing. I think the only thing we miss using on-line learning is experiencing Sofia’s warmth within our home. She has a very nurturing, warm and reassuring presence, which is missed by all. My daughter is however enjoying the on-line learning, as common with most teenagers, it involves the use of technology! The window to the modern teenagers engagement.
