Mastery-Based Learning

Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation?
Of course not! Then why do we rush students through education when they haven't always grasped the basic concepts?
Educator Sal Khan

Our purpose in designing mastery-based courses is just this!

To support students, who enrol on our mastery-based courses, grasp the basic concept, gain the required knowledge, and acquire the skills before moving on to the next level.
Our mastery-based courses are designed, delivered and structured with this aim. The course tutor will guide and provide constructive feedback to the pupil. The pupils study the course content until they feel 100% ready to take the test, and only when they have achieved the desired outcome do they move on to the next level.

The time scale

The study time given on the course page is only a guide. We fully acknowledge that some pupils will take longer to master the content, whilst others may whiz through the content in lesser time. It is due to several factors, though most crucially, it is the pupil's prior knowledge of the topic, aptitude to understand the concepts, willingness to learn, the effort and perseverance they bring to accomplish the task, and access to the course materials, etc. Other factors such as quality instruction, timely feedback and productive discussion with the course tutor also have a bearing. There may be other factors affecting the progress a pupil can make in achieving mastery of the topic. We recommend you discuss this with the course tutor to overcome any obstacles.
The student will have as much time and intervention as they need to understand and thus master the course material. Our course tutors are fully committed to working with parents to support their children enrolled on our courses to achieve their desired outcomes.

The mastery scale

The level of mastery required for each course is different. It ranges from 75% to 100% pass mark.
The big idea here is that students must persevere and keep learning until they achieve the expected marks before they move on to learning a new skill set within the course or to the next level. The students who approach learning with this mindset are far more resilient and ready to engage with the content.
The six tiers mastery scale: Unfamiliar, Adequate, Emergent, Proficient, Distinguished and Master. Each describes a new level of understanding of the course content.
