What qualifications do I need to be a private tutor?

We aim to provide the highest quality of service to all. For private tutor work, we only accept applications from qualified teachers, teaching assistant or experienced professional tutors, trainer or coach.

Do I need teaching experience?

Yes, at least:

One year or more as a qualified teacher or teaching assistant.
Three years or more as a professional tutor, trainer or coach.

What are my responsibilities as a tutor?

As a private tutor, you:

Consult with the parent/guardian to explore the needs of the pupil.
Assess the pupil based on your FREE consultation with parents, guardians or teachers.
Create a tailored learning plan based on the assessment result and the pupil's needs.
Arrange a mutually convenient time with the parent or guardian for tutoring sessions.
Choose or create appropriate resources to deliver your lessons.
Deliver the lessons as planned.
Support students for any exams, tests or training opportunities.
Must safely maintain student records and produce progress reports if parents require.

What do I need to deliver online lessons?

Here is a checklist to help you get ready for online lessons.

You'll need:

A laptop or desktop computer.
A wired headset. Apple Earphones and Bluetooth devices (like AirPods) are not suitable. It may disrupt the audio and lead to echo or a lack of audio.
A webcam - your device will already have a default camera built-in. Please note, all tutors are required to use their webcam at least in the first lesson.
Strong internet connection.
A compatible browser.
Graphics tablet – recommended.

What technical expertise do I need to tutor online?

You need to be able to use and be familiar with virtual platforms such as BBB, Blackboard, zoom or Microsoft teams. Understand your browser settings.

What information do I need to give for my tutor profile?

Do I need DBS?

Yes, a valid DBS certificate is required for all UK based tutors.

What are the teaching times?

Flexible, based on teacher and pupils availability. Tutors book the lessons directly with the parent or guardian. Lessons are usually one hour, though you may increase to 1.5 or 2 hours if requested by the customer.

Remuneration and Bookings

How much do I earn?

Your earning potential depends on the hours you teach, the number of students you teach and the fees you charge.
With Alphareach, as a private tutor, you can follow our recommended fees or set your rates. You keep 100% of your earnings from all tutoring work, paid by parents or guardians.
We do not charge you a commission or a one-off fee.

When and how will I be paid?

You invoice Alphareach on the last date of each calendar month or the 1st week of the following month, for the lessons you have taught.
Alphareach shall make payment to you by direct bank transfer within three working days of receiving your invoice.

How do I book or reschedule the lessons?

To book or reschedule the your lessons, you must contact the parent/guardian of the pupil directly. You must not contact the pupil directly if they are under eighteen years of age.

What if I am unable to deliver a lesson?

We expect tutors to be punctual and fully committed to the work they do. Though, there may be unavoidable circumstances that may cause delay or unable to deliver your scheduled lesson.

If you cannot deliver a booked lesson, we recommend you reschedule the session notifying the customer and Alphareach. The customer will get a refund for any paid session if you are unable to reschedule the session.

My pupil is absent from the lesson - what should I do?

You will need to reschedule your lessons if the pupil's parents has given you advance notice at least 24 hours before the scheduled time or if they are absent due to technical difficulties or an emergency.

What if the pupil's parents cancel the booked lesson?

Sometimes things crop up, and you have to rearrange the lessons.
Our cancellation policy ensures that students have flexibility and continuity with their learning, and the tutors have protection against last-minute changes.

Parents/guardians notify the tutor to cancel the lessons as early as possible or at a minimum of 24 hours before the scheduled date and time.
As a private tutor, your priority is to reschedule the missed appointment for a convenient time.

What is the refund policy for missed lessons?

We understand that sometimes lessons are cancelled.
If you cannot reschedule your booked lesson, the customer will receive a refund for the cancelled session and you cannot claim for the cancelled lesson in the invoice.

How many sessions of tuition sessions can I do?

There is no fixed time frame for the personalised lesson plan. It is very much dependent on the needs of the pupil. It can be that the pupil requires a few booster sessions for few weeks or long-term support for months or years.

Every pupil has a unique talent.
With a combination of guidance and opportunity, they can reach their true potential.
